2017 - Italy Fail to Qualify for the World Cup

Four-time winners Italy fail to qualify for 2018 Football World Cup for the first time since 1958 when losing an 1-0 aggregate playoff to Sweden. The defeat signaled the end of legendary goalkeeper and record cap holder Gianluigi Buffon, led to the sacking of manager Gian Piero Ventura and the resignation of the president of the Italian Football Federation, Carlo Tavecchio.

2014 - Sharma Breaks One-day International Record

Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma breaks the one-day international record for the highest individual score by a batsman when recording 264 runs off 173 balls against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens.

1998 - Senna Wins First F1 World Title

Ayrton Senna wins his first Formula 1 World Drivers Championship title by finishing second in the season ending Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide. Brazilian Senna, who won the title by 3 points from French rival Alain Prost, went on to win a further 2 titles in 1990 and 1991 before his untimely death at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994.

1999 - England win "Battle of Britain"

England win "Battle of Britain"England beats Scotland 2-0 in the first leg of the Euro 2000 playoffs in a match that becomes known as the "Battle of Britain" owing to some of the horrendous tackles and the ten yellow cards that were issued. England emerge victorious thanks to two first half goals from Paul Scholes and go on to secure qualification despite a 1-0 return loss in Wembley.

1994 - Schumacher wins First F1 World Championships

German Michael Schumacher wins the first of his seven Formula One World Championship titles in controversial circumstances in the final race of the season at the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide. Schumacher, driving for Benetton-Ford, led Briton Damon Hill of the Williams-Renault team by a single point going in to the final race. On lap 35 of the race a collision between Schumacher and Hill, which appeared to be caused by Schumacher turning into Hill as he drew alongside him, forced both cars out of the race leaving Schumacher as the champion by a single point.

1992 - Bowe Becomes Heavyweight Champion

American Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe becomes the undisputed heavyweight champion of he world with a unanimous points decision victory over Evander Holyfield. Bowe successfully defended the title twice before losing the belts to Holyfield on Nov 6, 1993 in a rematch best remembered for a parachutist dropping into Bowes corner.

1982 - Tragedy in the Ring - Duk Koo Kim Dies

WBA lightweight champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini beats South Korean challenger Duk Koo Kim by TKO in round 14 outside Caesars Palace, Las Vegas after a bruising encounter that aired live across America on CBS. The decisive blow comes early in the 14th round when a hard right from Mancini sends Kim crashing to the canvas and although Kim rises valiantly to his feet the ref stops the fight 19 seconds into the round.

Tragedy ensues when Kim collapses into a coma immediately after the fight and emergency surgery is not enough as Kim dies five days later on November 18th. Kim's death triggers a series of major changes within boxing with bouts being reduced from 15 rounds to 12, a standing eight or "protection" count is introduced, and more stringent pre-fight medical testing comes into effect. Further tragedy follows when Kim's mother commits suicide in the aftermath of his death and later the fight referee, Richard Green, dies by self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Mancini fights another eight times after the Kim fight and retires in 1992 with a record of 29-5.
